Q: What is Medieval Astrology?
Classical or Traditional Astrology is roughly divided into three distinct periods.
• Hellenistic, circa 200 BC to 600 AD
• Medieval, 800 AD to 1500 AD
• Renaissance, around 1500 AD to 1700 AD
Classical Astrology has four main disciplines:
• Natal astrology examines and predicts events based on a birth chart
• Horary Astrology answers specific questions by looking at a horoscope for the time of the asking of the question.
• Electional Astrology chooses the most auspicious time to take action.
• Mundane or Geo-political Astrology uses a variety of techniques to predict events on a national scale or over long periods of history. Mundane Astrology also includes weather prediction.
Q: How Does Classical Astrology Differ From Modern Astrology?
A: The most important distinction is the way the two systems approach a natal chart.
- In Classical Astrology, a natal chart is a reflection of conditions in life such as wealth, family, health, career, etc. The Planets in a natal chart take on roles to represent these conditions. In Modern Astrology, the natal chart is a reflection of the person’s psyche (i.e., the Moon is the subconscious mind and emotional body, Mercury is the conscious mind, Venus is how we love, etc.).
- Classical Astrology focuses on accurate predictions, and helping a person maneuver life’s ups and downs using techniques such as horary, elections, natal forecasts, etc. Modern Astrology's predictions largely consist of emotional themes and psychological ups and downs rather than concrete events.
- Classical Astrology focuses on Planets to determine if they are strong or weak, well or ill-placed and translating that into areas of difficulty or ease. Modern Astrology makes use of Signs to determine psychological remedies.
- Classical Astrology is event-centered. Modern Astrology is person-centered.
The proponents of Modern Astrology include Alan Leo, Dane Rudhyar, and more recently—Liz Greene, Jan Spiller, Jeffrey Wolf Greene, and Stephen Arroyo.
Q: Do you teach Medieval Astrology?
A: I practice Classical to Modern Astrology which includes medieval techniques.
Yes, I introduce medieval techniques my classes.
If you are asking whether I teach Time Lord systems—
Yes. I enjoy teaching Time Lord systems to those who WANT TO APPRECIATE the historical side of Astrology, and preserve tradition.
If a person would like to use Time Lord systems for PREDICTIVE PURPOSES, he is better off making use of more modern methods while applying medieval techniques such as Rulerships.
Why make use of a horse-drawn carriage to take you to work every day if can ride a motorized vehicle?
The predictions, insights and learning you can get out of Time Lord systems is very limited; they were developed at a time way before people had the means to delineate time uniformly and accurately; thus predictions back then were very broad or general.
Nowadays, because of computers and accurate time-keeping devices including cellphones, predictions can be very accurate and detailed.
Transits, when applied properly, is a good example of a modern method using medieval techniques to provide very clear, accurate and detailed predictions.
Notes
1. The Zodiac Man dates all the way back to the Middle Ages. It was used mainly in medicine by working alongside the Moon. When the Moon is aligned with a certain sign correlations to a body part, bodily system or the four humors are made.
2. Planetary movements were used to diagnose illnesses or to decide when a medical procedure can be done.
3. In the 12th-13th century, it was required by law to calculate the Moon’s position before performing any medical procedure.
4. Medieval Astrologers also relied on the movements of Planets for agricultural activities and to predict weather.
